Climate change ~ be part of the solution.

Global warming is getting worse and more quickly than most scientists had earlier warned. While many countries are working hard at solutions, even building new economies along the way, we need leaders at all levels and in every sector working together to get the job done. Canada's environmental groups are at the forefront, calling for government and industry action and motivating people to change towards sustainable lifestyles. Your support means an even stronger public voice for change.

Protect our ecosystems.

Wildlife habitat on crown and private land must be protected to ensure that our ecosystems are healthy. Many critical habitat areas are in valley bottoms, river deltas and coastal lowlands where people also live. Increasing development is threatening many ecologically sensitive sites.

Groups across Canada are actively encouraging all levels of government to secure Crown lands with high biodiversity values as protected areas, parks, and ecological reserves.

Others are raising funds to permanently acquire and manage private lands, when purchasing land is the best alternative to protect threatened wildlife and plant communities. Rising land values necessitate more and larger fundraising campaigns. Your donation will help to secure land forever. And, please consider contributing to (or starting) an endowment for perpetual care of your favourite natural area.

If you own ecologically sensitive land and if you want to ensure that future owners will also respect the ecological features of your land, please consider donating your land to a land trust or placing a covenant on your land. This type of gift may be eligible for tax benefits through the Ecological Gifts Program.

Thousands of people are now involved with partnerships and programs that monitor and steward common areas such as streams, lakeshores, and marine shorelines. Other initiatives, usually called landowner contact programs, are designed to help individual owners learn about managing their properties for nature. Innovative range and forest management programs are also emerging. Everyone is working together for nature! But these programs need funding for materials, research, educational programs and staff support. Your financial support means volunteers and neighbours can together take care of our ecosystems.

Conservation groups are working on-the-ground (and in-the-water) to restore and/or enhance habitat. They are reclaiming old industrial sites, cleaning up streams, and removing and controlling introduced species such as broom. While much is donated in time and supplies, there are also expenses related to materials, supplies, equipment and workers to do this important work. Your donation will get people into gumboots and hard hats for nature.

Learn about our natural world.

Through understanding comes action for nature. Most organizations provide educational programs for all ages, ranging from youth programs to events for seniors. Writing and publishing projects, nature celebration events, outings, and providing expertise to decision makers are just some of the ways that groups share their knowledge with their communities. Please enable their work with your donation.

Open children's and teachers' eyes to the wonder of the natural world.

Many groups provide information and guest lecturers to classrooms to excite children (and their teachers) about the phenomenal world we live in. They are often called on for special school projects. Volunteers can often be found in (and out of) the classrooms, showing children what it means to be part of our living natural world.

Support research projects that unlock the mysteries of nature.

There is so much we have yet to learn! Research projects by conservation groups create credible information and mapping resources for land use planning and decision processes. Many hundreds of people annually contribute to bird studies and water monitoring projects. Others help with endangered species recovery programs. Your gift will support citizen science projects.

Help groups provide services and expertise.

People in every community are dedicated to protecting the natural environment and to providing services to their fellow citizens. But, to do the work that nature needs, groups need funding and expertise. Volunteer for a conservation group and discover the joy that comes with being involved and making a difference.
